Our School Newsletter

Friday 25 March

Principal's report

What an exciting week we had with Harmony Week activities and today with National Ride to School Day. It was wonderful to see so many of our students wearing the colour orange to represent Harmony Day and safely equipped with helmets when riding their bikes and scooters. Riding your bike / scooter / skates is a great way to stay fit, healthy and active. Thank you to all the students and staff who took part in both of these very important national events.

COMMUNITY EVENTS AND FUNDRAISING SUB- COMMITTEE

Last week we held an open morning for parents and carers to join our school Community Events and Fundraising group (Parent Club) to discuss opportunities to connect with our community and raise funds for much needed items to enhance student learning and engagement, including equipment for passive play indoors and outdoors.

We welcome as many parents / carers as possible to become active participants in school life. The group will meet together a couple of times a term to plan the community and fundraising events that will occur during the year. Keep an eye out in newsletters and on Compass for details. If you have some spare time and would like to help out in any way, please contact the school. It doesn’t have to be a regular commitment - any form of assistance would be greatly appreciated.

One of the first community events and fundraising activities our parent club have planned this term:

Causal Clothes Day –2022 Floods School Aid National Campaign

The unprecedented weather event in Queensland and New South Wales has school kids concerned and wanting to help. In response to the unfolding flooding disaster that is inundating so many communities on the East Coast, School Aid has launched its ‘Flood Appeal 2022’.

The campaign is calling on Australian schools to raise money for the communities that have been affected by this disaster. At Craigieburn Primary School we will be having a Casual Clothes Day next week on Friday 1 April and ask for student to bring along a gold coin donation to raise money for the flood affected areas.

EASTER FUN
is on the last day of term, students will be able to preorder a special ‘Easter’ morning tea for recess. A notice has gone home with every student, information is on Compass and our school Website. We encourage orders to be made through Flexischools.

ISSUE RESOLUTION

Just a reminder that if you have a concern at all regarding your child, the first point of call should always be your child’s classroom teacher and then if the issues continue or you are still concerned, please speak with the Area Assistant Principal beyond this a meeting can be made to speak with the Principal.

If you would like more information regarding our school’s Complaints and Grievances policy and processes, please click here to read the poilicy on the school website.

EARLY PICK-UPS

If students are being picked up early by adults other than the immediate family, you must notify the office that this will occur, ahead of time. We always aim to ensure student safety and we do not release children to adults unless we know there is permission to do so. Of course, early  pick-ups should be avoided as much as possible and should only occur in unavoidable circumstances, as they disrupt learning for our students.

LOST PROPERTY

Please come along and have a look if your child is missing any clothing. All named items are returned to student classrooms. If unnamed items are not collected by the end of term they will go into our second hand uniform cupboard or be donated to charity.

SCHOOL CANTEEN

Unfortunately we will not be running our school Canteen from Thursday 24 - Tuesday 29 March. If you have made orders online, these will be credited to you for another time.
The canteen is scheduled to be up and running again on Wednesday 30 March.

Curriculum News

A busy two weeks and here we are in Week 9 already.

On the Thursday 17 March, our Preps enjoyed their Prep Teddy Bears’ Picnic. They have been learning about the letter ‘T’. Teachers planned lots of fun learning experiences for the day, including Mathematics, Reading, Writing and Physical Education. The Prep team have provided student reflections and photos for you to enjoy.

In Performing Arts, a group of students have been selected to represent Craigieburn Primary School at the Victorian State School Spectacular (VSSS). The first day of rehearsals has taken place on Tuesday 22 March, with many practices at school and home to follow. The students are keen to participate and are even rehearsing during some lunchtimes. When the Victorian State School Spectacular is held, on Saturday 10 September at John Cain Arena, our students will join students from many schools to perform. The costumes! The lights! The performers! The action! It will be spectacular.

This week is Harmony Week, which runs from Monday 21 March until Sunday 27 March. The children are participating in a grade activity to focus on Harmony Week themes. Grades Prep – 2 will create a Paper Chain People after a class discussion on cultural diversity. They use a paper chain template to draw a picture of themselves to represent something special about their own culture or family. They will share their paper chain person with the class and explain their drawing. Students will use the paper chains to decorate their classroom for Harmony Day. Our Grades 3-6 will make Marvellous Mosaics to familiarises students with mosaic art as found in many different cultural buildings, such as Muslim mosques or the Basilica of St John Lateran, in Rome. Students will be Students introduced to mosaic art through pictures. In small groups, students arrange their mosaics together to form a larger mosaic and work collaboratively to reach agreement on where each piece should go. Group mosaics are then combined and displayed as one large class mosaic, creating a metaphor for diversity and unity. On Friday, it is our Ride to School Day and students are wearing orange to celebrate Harmony Day. We will share some photos in our next newsletter.

NAPLAN is moving to Online delivery in Term 2, when testing will occur between Tuesday 10 to Friday 20 May. To help students prepare, Grade 3 and 5 completed an Omnibus practice test on Friday 18 March. It was an opportunity for students to see and discuss the format of the test, asking questions when they needed help with technology. No results were recorded on the day. Only Grade 5 are required to do a written test online, as Grade 3 students will use paper and pencils for their writing test. The writing practice test was held on Thursday 24 March. Teachers will continue activities in class to assist students to familiarise themselves with the technology and examination skills needed. The knowledge needed to answer the questions, is developed during daily classroom lessons and participation in home learning throughout the years. Students can become concerned during NAPLAN preparation. Please let them know that it is only one test and teachers have lots of tests to identify their learning progress. All they need to do is try their best in any test.

On Friday 11 March, Grade 6 students participated in the Term 1 Craigieburn District Gala Day. Students joined 8 schools in the Craigieburn District and travelled to Craigieburn Basketball Stadium, Roxburgh Park Primary School, Roxburgh Park Sporting Fields and Roxburgh Park United Soccer Club to compete in basketball, tee ball, volleyball and cricket.  The girls tee ball team were ranked 1st in the district and have qualified for Division. Students at Craigieburn Primary School showed our school values while in public and teachers were very proud of their behaviour. In Term 2, the Craigieburn District will hold another Gala Day, with schools competing in soccer, football, and netball. Students who continue to be positive role models and show our school values will be chosen to participate in Term 2.

Maths Olympiad and Maths Games - Kim Rotondi and the CPS Numeracy Team

During Terms 2 and 3, we will be running the Australasian Problem-Solving Mathematical Olympiad and Games. Students from Grades 4-6 with an interest in Mathematics have been nominated by their teachers to participate in this program. The nominated students will work together as a team weekly, to practise solving advanced mathematical problems.

Once every month they will compete against other students from all around Australia, completing a challenge test called the Olympiad and Games Contest.

Each week, teachers will provide practice sessions for the students. These practice sessions will occur every Wednesday morning before school starting at 8:20 - 8:50am.

There is no charge to participate in the Maths Olympiad and Games. Students with a passion for Mathematics are asked to commit to the regular weekly practice sessions.

Students who have been nominated to participate in the Maths Olympiad or Maths games will receive a permission note. Please return the signed permission note by Monday 4 April if you would like your child to participate.

School Nursing Program

The School Nursing Program offers support to Prep students and families through the School Entrant Health questionnaire (SEHQ). The Victorian Primary School Nursing Program is a free health assessment service offered by the Department of Education and Training to all children during their first year of primary school.

All Prep students have now received the School Entrant Health Questionnaire (SEHQ).  SEHQ is a parent report instrument where you can record your concerns and observations about your child’s health and wellbeing as they begin primary school.

We are very fortunate to be receiving a visit from the school nurse during Term 3. At the time of the main school visit, the Visiting Primary School Nurse will complete a review of all Prep students who have returned a SEHQ with signed consent. This may include an assessment screen of distance vision, hearing, speech and/or teeth along with any other concerns raised by you or teachers in relation to behaviour, health or wellbeing.

Can you please complete and return the form to your child’s classroom teacher via your students blue communication bag no later than Friday 1 April.

Prep Teddy Bears' Picnic

Last week the Preps learnt all about the letter Tt.

On Thursday 17 March, the Preps had a wonderful day celebrating with a Teddy Bears’ picnic filled with lots of favourite teddy bears, toys and fun themed activities.

It was a lovely day and the children enjoyed participating in a Tiny Teddy and Spoon Race, Teddy between your legs and Teddy on your head relay races. The children also played a teddy version of the game Duck, Duck Goose.

During Maths, the children measured the length of their teddies using unifix cubes. The Preps read books and rhymes to their teddies and wrote stories about their soft toys.

The children participated in a Teddy Bear parade and a disco. All the children were so happy and enjoyed every part of the day. The Teddy Bears’ picnic was a wonderful opportunity to bring our Prep students together in a positive and supportive way.

Here are some stories that the children wrote about their experience:

I liked the picnic. By Storm

I love my teddy. By Taylan

I liked the disco party. By Ariyan

I liked to play the spoon race. By Isabella

I liked the Teddy on your Head race. By Milla

I liked the Teddy Teddy Game. By Mohamed

My favourite one was Teddy on your Head race. By Lucy

I liked the leg race. By Elora

I liked my teddy bear. By Samrath

Prep Multicultural Day – Harmony Week

During our Term 1 Inquiry Unit, ‘Where in the World do we come from?’, the Prep students have been learning about where they come from and who the people in their family are. The children have enjoyed learning about where they were born and raised, including how they are related to each other. This was shared in class and teachers read lots of stories from around the world.

On Wednesday 23 March, the Preps had a special day to celebrate the cultural diversity in our community. The children came to school dressed up in their cultural costumes.

We had a parade in our building, participated in some special activities and watched the movie Moana who seeks to help her people. A story inspired by Polynesian myths.

Click here to see pictures from the day.

Grade 5 / 6 Portsea Camp

The Grade 5/6 students who attended the Portsea Camp had an enjoyable experience. The students challenged themselves in many different ways by pushing themselves to try new experiences.

The students participated in six different rotational activities, including the giant swing, beach activities, team building activities, kayaking, survival skills and orienteering. The beach appeared to be a favourite activity for many of our students.

The students enjoyed some different night time activities while on camp, we went for a night time walk to the Portsea Pier, they tested their general knowledge during a trivia night and on the second night a movie was welcomed by many tired campers.

Before coming home, we set out on a walk to Sorrento and enjoyed our morning snack at the park. The walk was quite long and ensured a nice quiet bus ride on the way home.

While on camp, the students tried many new experiences for the first time. The teachers were proud of all the students who attended camp, they all consistently displayed our school values, especially resilience when facing new challenges, and represented our school in the best way!

See our Camp photos by clicking here.

Grade 6 Interschool Sports Gala Day

On Friday, for Interschool Sports, the boy’s cricket team played against three schools. Sadly, we lost all of our games. But, more importantly, we tried our best, had fun and showed great sportsmanship.

Dayne 6C

On Friday, the girls T-Ball team played four games and won all four of them. We showed great sportsmanship and worked together throughout the games.

Sarah 6C

On Friday the boys’ volleyball team did very well. We travelled on a bus to Roxburgh Park Primary School. We won 3 out of 4 games and came 3rd out of 7 schools by the end of the day. We all had fun playing against other schools.

Joshua 6D

Last Friday the Girls’ volleyball team played against other schools in our area. We won one out of the four games. The first game was really competitive, so was the second, but as we kept playing it got easier. The second last game was really close and we only lost by 2 points. In the last games we won against Our Lady’s Primary school.  We all tried our hardest in every game and when we played, we always walked away with smiles on our faces.

Chiara 6D

Last Friday some of the grade 6 girls travelled to Craigieburn Basketball Stadium to compete against other schools. We won 2 games out of 4 and we came 3rd place overall. Everyone enjoyed the day and had lots of fun while showing our school values and sportsmanship.

Simarjot 6D

The boys’ basketball team won the first game and the score was 12 to 30. The second game, we just lost by 5 points. It was very close and competitive. The third game we lost by 2 points, a very close and frustrating game. The last game we won 22 to 0. We were all having fun and played as a team. It was a great day. Thank you to all the teachers for supporting us on the day.

Emre 6C

The boy’s tee-ball team won one game and tied in three games. We were very happy with our results because our team had only a limited amount of experience and we had to adapt to new rules and different playing styles. Overall, we had a great time.

Murat 6A

Physical Education Report

Our Prep students, together with teachers have developed rules and discussed behaviour expectations, as well as the significance of teamwork.

Students have focused on the fundamental skills of running and catching and have been sharing the things they enjoy about being physically active.

Preps have engaged in a range of activities to show their ability to follow instructions for personal safety and fair play, as well as being able to respond to a whistle and commands when participating in activities such as running relays, silent ball and circle catching. Prep students enjoy participating in the Perceptual Motor Program, which is a movement-based program that assists younger children in fundamental movement skills including balancing, jumping, climbing, skipping, and hopping.

The Grade 1 and 2 students, have been focusing on overarm throw and catching techniques throughout Term 1. Some of the activities they have participated in have been Monster Ball, Dodgeball, Hot Potato and Ball Chase. They have been using strategies to work in group situations as they participate in physical activities and are learning how to include others.

Grade 3 and 4 students have been concentrating on striking and catching. Some of the group activities they have competed in include Tennis, Hockey, Volleyball and Cricket. They have been demonstrating movement concepts and strategies to create scoring opportunities. They have been using skills, such as strategic thinking to improve their game performance.

In Grade 5 and 6, students have been participating positively in groups and teams by encouraging others and negotiating roles and responsibilities with the group. Their focus areas for this term included two handed strikes, Tee ball and Volleyball. Students have been monitoring and analysing their own performance and undertaking a variety of roles in team games, such as umpiring and coaching.

National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence

On Friday, 18 March, CPS participated in the National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence (NDA). The theme for 2022 was Kindness Culture.

By building Kindness Culture together, we promoted inclusion, respect and community belonging for all students in our school.

Children participated in classroom activities to promote this event and we celebrated the day during our virtual assembly with an inspirational message from our student leaders.

The Grade 3’s discussed ways to be a great friend and show Kindness around our school. The children loved making their own ‘Chatterboxes’ where they explored reading and acting out various scenarios, and the positive steps to take if bullying were to occur.

Grade 2A wrote positive messages and kind words on a paper chain. They had a great time completing the activity.

Click here to see the photos of the students participating in the above activities.
