Step-Up Day/ Statewide Transition Day and 2024 Classes
Our Whole School Step-Up Day & Statewide Transition Day was held on Tuesday 12 December. Our students spent the day/morning session in their 2024 classes with their 2024 teachers.
Year 6 students spent the day at Secondary College exploring the grounds, timetables, meeting their teachers, learning about the subjects for next year, and making new friends.
Our Step-Up day (morning) gave CPS students an opportunity to meet their teacher, connect with their peers getting to know one another. We thank our new students and teachers to CPS for joining us on this day.
Class Placements
The placement of students each year is a task that our staff takes very seriously, with the learning and wellbeing of each individual student considered. Classes have been formed by teachers, our wellbeing team and school leaders. Due to the many variables and delicate balance of each class, we consider the 2024 class placements as final.
We have a high level of confidence in our leadership and teaching teams to make decisions based on the best outcomes for all of our students and trust our students will settle well into their new classes in 2024. We ask families to support the informed decisions of our staff and ensure all conversations with their children regarding their 2024 class placement are positive and encouraging.
CPS currently has 538 confirmed student enrolments for 2024. Our class structure is as follows:
4 x Prep classes
5 x Year 1/2 classes
3 x Year 3 classes
4 x Year 4 classes
4 x Year 5 classes
5 x Year 6 classes
2024 Staffing
As always at the end of a school year, we have an opportunity to welcome new members to our team and say farewell to some of our current staff.
In 2024 we welcome the following teaching staff: Stacie Strappazon, Vanessa Certoma, James Warren, Tanusree Ghosh, Shuyang Wang, Ashley Unsworth, Dermot Murphy and Jessica Sheehan (First Aid). We look forward to welcoming our new staff to our CPS team and working with them in 2024.
We say farewell to Natalina Mather, Jaston Soares, Amy Odongo, Belinda Bowman, Jenny Tapungao, Kim Milne, Jamie Saddington, Diane Saraceno and Seda Duman who are leaving CPS to pursue other opportunities. We thank these staff members for their contribution to CPS and wish them all the very best in their future endeavours.
A full staffing profile will be shared with families early next year.
2024 Curriculum Update
As you may be aware, in 2023 we were unable to staff a LOTE program at CPS. After early consultation with both the Education subcommittee and School Council, it was agreed that CPS would seek to renew our LOTE program by providing an Auslan program in 2024.
Following an extensive recruitment drive over the last 6 months, we have once again been unable to staff our LOTE program at CPS and as such will not be running LOTE as a specialist subject in 2024.
Instead, we will be maintaining the 2023 specialist subjects of Visual Arts, Performing Arts, Physical Education and STEM.
However, we are committed to providing language experiences to our students and as agreed upon at School Council in 2023 our preference for the language taught at CPS is Auslan. As such, we will be providing Auslan lessons through Auslan Education Services in 2024.
Auslan Education Services has a team of Auslan Qualified people who deliver an online program that provides lesson planners and explicit teaching that our teachers will implement. CPS staff will be provided professional learning opportunities to ensure we are engaging fully in the program as intended.
We are very much looking forward to re-establishing our LOTE program in 2024.

2024 Student Leadership Team
Developing the qualities of leadership and responsibility is an important element of the curriculum at Craigieburn Primary School.
We aim to provide students with a range of opportunities to grow in self-confidence and take on increasing responsibilities. Leadership requires enthusiasm, passion and a positive attitude for what it is you want to complete or change.
Leadership is also about working with and trusting others to achieve a common vision. We have many examples of strong student leaders in our school, and it was pleasing to have so many high-quality candidates to choose our School and House Captains, we are looking forward to working closely with them to build their leadership capacity. Reading The students in Prep have been reading the fairy tales The Three Little Pigs, The Three Billy Goats Gruff and Jack and the Beanstalk. The students have talked about the author’s message in these fairytales and they have discussed the problem and solution. Here is what the students had to say about the author’s message in The Three Little Pigs: Don’t be lazy, work hard together and listen to your Mum and Dad. Ava PA Work hard because if you work hard you will get more money. Armani PB The author’s message in The Three Billy Goats Gruff is: Don’t be selfish or greedy. You have to share and be kind. Ayla PA The author’s message in Jack and the Beanstalk is: Try hard and never give up. Chance PA |
Writing Throughout 2023 our Prep have built their knowledge and skills to think, say, draw and write to support the writing process. We are so proud of the way they can express themselves in the written form, recording the sound they hear in words and crafting engaging sentences. During Writing, our students have been writing recounts about their weekend. They have been learning about revising and editing and how this process enhances their work. Students read their recounts to a partner to ensure it made sense. Often, reading what we have written aloud allows us to hear the missing words or the punctuation that has not been added. Students have also been scanning their work for words that are spelt incorrectly, circling them and using tools such as the word wall or word lists to identify the correct spelling. There are many ways you can support the continued development of your child’s writing skills over the break. Keeping a journal is a great way for students to write everyday. A scrapbook or notebook can be utilised and they can draw and write about their experiences at the conclusion of each day. Have fun writing about all of those holiday adventures! |
Maths During maths, this fortnight the prep students have been learning about different Australian coins and notes using play money. They have participated in various activities to assist them in recognising coins and notes. Some of the activities have included playing bingo, sorting, ordering and doing coin rubbings. Here is what we know about money: I learnt that the silver coins are called cents and the gold coins are called dollars. Ivaan PA Two dollars has two hundred cents in it. Even though 50 cents is bigger than the two dollar coin it is worth more. Lexi PA I know 4 fifty cent coins makes two dollars. Harper PA I learnt that the one dollar coin has five kangaroos. Azra PB I learnt that the queen is at the back of the coins. Aishleen PB I learnt that the coins have Australian animals. Sanimar PB You can buy more things with a two dollar coin than a one dollar coin. Nisa PC An echidna is on the 5 cent coin. Ahri PC The fifty cent coin has a kangaroo and an emu. It is silver. Guntas PC You can put $4 and $4 together to make $8. Alyssa PD 50c and 50c makes 100c. Dakota PD $1 and $2 makes $3. Emilia PD $5 and $5 makes $10. Indy PD We can spend money to buy different things. Lucy PD We can give poor people money because they might need it. Eliz PD $1 and $2 coins are gold. Divneet PD 50c, 10c, 20c and 5c are silver. Indianna PD |
Inquiry Prep students have continued to look at the life cycles of different animals. In the past fortnight, they have investigated the life cycle of a frog! They learnt about the different stages frogs go through from an egg, to a tadpole, a tadpole with legs, a young frog then an adult frog. Lots of discussion happened between students and they demonstrated their understanding by sequencing pictures to depict the life cycle of this creature. |
Year 1 |
Reading During reading this week, we practised presenting our plays during the Reader’s Theatre sessions. During these sessions, students used their vocal expression to help the audience understand the story rather than visual storytelling such as sets, costumes and movement. The scripts allowed the students to develop their reading and vocal expression skills and have fun while doing it! Here is what the students had to say about the Reader’s Theatre sessions: I liked reading the script in a different voice.- Nabil 1B The best part about reading was performing Hansel and Gretel. - Everly 1B I liked working with my friends. I was the Granny Spider.- Grace 1B I liked being the narrator because I like reading- Nina 1A I liked the Three Billy Goats Gruff because I got to be a troll- Syona 1A I liked reading the different characters because I got to practise my punctuation- 1A I learned that acting is really fun - Tyler 1C I learned that we need to change the voice to become a wolf - William 1C I liked having fun with my friends while performing different characters - Taveesh 1C |
Writing During writing, students have been focusing on communication. They have used writing as their vehicle to have a conversation. Working with a partner, students talked to one another through their writing! No spoken words were exchanged. For the conversation to be successful, they had to ensure that what they wrote made sense. Through this exercise, students had to apply their revising and editing skills, reading back what they wrote to ensure the message given was accurate. Students had so much fun conversing in silence, but it did take a lot of energy not to break into spoken conversation! Students in Year 1 have also been learning about writing letters. They have investigated the structure of a letter and practised writing letters, applying their knowledge of the conventions of writing. Over the holiday break, writing letters is a wonderful way to engage your child in the writing process. They could write to family members or a friend. All they need is some paper, an envelope and a stamp! Another great way to engage your child in writing over the holiday period is to get them involved in writing shopping lists. Plan for the weekly shop as a family and encourage your child to record the items required for purchase. This is a great incidental way to incorporate writing into an everyday task. |
Maths As it is close to the end of the year, students in Year 1 have been revising many key areas of mathematics. They have been applying their knowledge of addition and subtraction to solve worded problems. Students used strategies such as counting on and counting back and tools such as number lines to find the answer. Counting skills have been consolidated with students practising their skip counting by 2s, 5s and 10s. They have looked for the patterns in counting and had lots of fun singing and chanting together. Students have demonstrated their knowledge of numbers and the place value system, using MAB and other hands-on learning materials to make numbers. Lots of discussion has occurred during this process with students sharing their knowledge and understanding with one another. We are very proud of all the progress students have made in mathematics this year! |
Special Event We are off to Sea Life Melbourne Aquarium on the 14th of December. We are excitedly looking forward to our excursion. |
Year 2 |
Reading Our Year 2 students have been investigating biographies during their reading lessons. They have engaged with many amazing mentor texts during this time. The book series, Little People Big Dreams, have been shared as a class with students learning about important figures from history. Pele, Amelia Earhart, Bruce Lee and Malala were just some of the books shared. Through reading these texts, students have learned about the features of a biography. They have also been writing responses about each book read. This is an important part of their development as readers and writers. Being able to share through writing what they have read demonstrates their comprehension of the text, a vital skill as a reader. |
Writing Wonderful links have been made between reading and writing, with students creating a biography of an important person. They have applied their research skills to find out key information about their chosen person and followed the writing process to explore and plan for their ideas. They revised and edited to refine their writing and then published their piece in a poster format, incorporating visuals and writing.

Maths As we wrap up the end of the year, we have been revising some of the more challenging topics that were covered throughout the year. A big focus has been on our understanding of fractions and identifying halves (2 equal parts) quarters (4 equal parts) and eights (8 equal parts). We have also been revising our understanding of division which is the process of breaking a number up into equal parts, and finding out how many equal parts can be made. For example, dividing 15 by 3 means splitting 15 into 3 equal groups of 5.
Here is what some of the students had to say about learning in maths: I enjoyed the games we played when learning about fractions! - Natalia 2A I liked drawing my picture of lollies and sharing them into equal groups. - Ali 2A I like maths the best. - Henry 2A I like learning about fractions because I also know how to turn them into decimals. - Yohan 2B I like that in maths I learn a lot of new things, I never knew about quarters until now. - Jahnavi 2B I liked learning about fractions and cutting things into half and quarters. - Ayman 2B I liked when I was breaking unifix to find half- Moeen 2C I enjoyed learning about eighths in Maths- Aubree 2C I love everything about Maths- Zavvy 2C |
Inquiry The culmination of our Year 2 Inquiry learning has been students creating their own toy that uses the forces of push or pull. They have followed the design process and utilised recycled materials to build their own example of a push/pull toy. Lots of fun has been had sharing their toys with their peers and testing them to see if they are influenced by the forces of push and pull. Students created a poster about their toy, listing the materials they used to create it and the steps they took to build it. The poster and toy were then presented to the class through an oral presentation. |
Year 3 |
Reading During Reading, our Year 3 students wrapped up the year working in collaborative groups to read and discuss texts. They have applied all the skills and strategies learned throughout the year during this valuable learning experience. They read texts independently for a short period each reading lesson and then met with their group to talk about the text. It was wonderful to listen to the rich discussions and to hear people sharing their views about what they had read. There were differing opinions but people shared their views respectfully. It is always okay not to agree but we need to share our opinions constructively. It was wonderful to see the valuable links being made by students between reading and speaking and listening. |
Writing: In writing, we have been learning to write letters. The features of a letter include a greeting, an opening line, content and a sign off. The students have begun writing a letter for their future Grade 4 teachers. In the letter they will include details about themselves and what they’re looking forward to for next year. Students added their favourite hobbies, books and subjects at school. Four to Six + Specialists Newsletter Term 4 Week 11
It is with great pride that I write to you for the final time in 2023. The senior students of Craigieburn Primary School have had a superb learning journey, not only in Term 4 but throughout the academic year. Our students have lived our school motto of ‘The Best in All We Do’ both in the classroom and outside at recess and lunchtime. Our students have been supported by the work of our teachers in building the strategies of our students to express our school values of Resilience, Responsibility and Kindness. I have personally witnessed so many of our students displaying leadership qualities around the school as they supported their fellow students to play their role in building a caring and nurturing community at CPS. Our wonderful Year 6 students will be bidding us farewell, our current Year 5 students are preparing to lead our senior school and our Year 4 students will be well positioned to be role models for next years’ Year 4 students.
I am looking forward to the last days of term as I continue my classroom walks, talking with the students about their learning. I have been particularly impressed with the connections the students are making between different parts of their learning, especially the links between reading and writing in their inquiry experiences.
Thank you to all the parents, carers and teachers who have worked so tirelessly in partnership together to ensure that our students are achieving their potential. We look forward to seeing you all again next term.

Reading - In Reading, the Year 4’s have been utilising their visualisation skills and have been drawing up a storm. We have been using poems as mentor texts and encouraging students to discuss the poem and how the author’s description of the characters appearance and behaviour affect the poem and how they visualise it. The students enjoyed developing their visualising skills, which is an important part of writing that enables a reader to develop a full understanding of what they are reading. It was really easy to visualise the Fat Cat, I visualised the cat as a cat that my teacher had. Ibrahim 4B It was fun and interactive to visualise the text. It was fun and we learned how to visualise. Riley 4B When the teacher was reading the poem, I visualised the cat looking in the fridge and eating the food. I imagined him throwing some foods out of the fridge. Noah 4A |
Writing - In Writing, the Year 4’s have been exploring the world of poems. Firstly they read and analysed the different structures of poems. Then they wrote their own acrostic, cinquain, shape and haiku poems. They enjoyed the challenge of following the structure and syllable limits of haiku poems. S I like that there were different types of poems and they had different rules to them. Some were about nature, some were about shapes. Renezmei 4B I wrote a shape poem, I wrote about a rectangle. Sarah 4A In Writing for the past week, we have been learning about poems, it was really fun. We got to partner up with a friend and write a poem. My favourite poem was the haiku poem. Physical Education In Physical Education, prep students have finished their final lesson of PMP which has been assisted by our year 6 leaders and now recently over the last 3 weeks some of our promising year 5 potential future leaders. Thank you to all the year 5 and 6 helpers. Our preps have taken their knowledge of catching and kicking and participated in whole class activities, from term 1 to the end of term 4 it has been amazing to see the development and growth in all of the amazing prep students. Year 1s and 2s have finished a dodging unit, where students have participated in multiple different dodging games with the playing area becoming smaller and smaller each week to challenge the students when participating in smaller spaces with a large playing group. The students have grown and shown the ability to dodge during multiple different activities and I’m excited for them to showcase their dodging knowledge during all the summer and winter sports throughout the remainder of their primary school years. The year 3s and 4s have finished their Hot Shots tennis unit. The students participated in a Hot Shots game simulating what a Hot Shots Gala day would look like when versing other schools throughout our Craigieburn district. The focus was on a doubles tournament with half the class being one school vs the other half of the class being another school. The students are ready to compete for CPS in next year's Hot Shots Gala day. Year 5 and 6s have finished the Netball unit, playing multiple games against their peers. Students started to really understand the rules and positions of Netball and it’s been a really fun unit to teach the students. At the end of the unit some year 6 students had an opportunity to verse some of the teachers at lunch time. |
Visual Arts - in visual arts this fortnight junior students have been making stick figures with icy pole sticks. They have then used pom poms to create the heads of their figures making them 3D. Some students turned their pom poms into sporting goods such as soccer balls and basketballs. In the upper school we have been making 3D masks. The students have learned how to fold paper and glue it so that it makes their art work 3D. With a little bit of glitter and some coloured paper decorations the masks have turned out brilliantly. Well Done to the students who participated in the mask making. |
Performing Arts It’s almost concert time and students are stage ready! We cannot wait to see all the families at the extended assembly where students from each class will perform a Christmas song, dressed in their Christmas flair! Students have been very excited during Performing Arts lessons and utilised their time efficiently to learn lyrics, the melody and actions to their song. In week 11, there was a significant improvement during rehearsals and their efforts and positive behaviour were rewarded by fun brain breaks activities. Some of the songs you will see our students singing are, “Jingle Bells” by Foundation students, “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer” by Year 2’s and “Feliz Navidad” by Year 5’s. The highlight from this term was seeing students join in song for a common purpose and trying their best. Well done CPS students! |

COVID-19 Reminder
There is at present an increase in community transmission of COVID-19 in Victoria.
You can help us keep our school as safe as possible by taking 2 important steps:
1. Ensure your COVID-19 vaccinations are up to date. Information on how and where to get vaccinated is available on the Get vaccinated webpage.
2. If your child shows symptoms of COVID-19, please ensure they stay home and get tested. The easiest way to test is to use a rapid antigen test (RAT). Free RATs are available from your local council
where you can collect 2 packs of 5 RATs and an extra 2 packs for each person in your household. People with disability and their carers can get 4 packs of 5 RATs. You are not required to have a Medicare card and you can collect RATs as many times as you need. You can also buy RATs at supermarkets, pharmacies and other retailers.
If your child has symptoms but tests negative, please ensure they stay home until they no longer have symptoms.
If the RAT test result is positive, please ensure they say home for at least 5 days and until there are no more symptoms.
Thank you for your support – these steps will help us all stay well.
